Commercial Still Frames

Since my commercial is simple, these are my only still frames through out the animation. It starts off with the animation of the logo as it is being drawn out on screen and then the website of the company popping up, following through with the slogan to represent what the company is about. Im still going to add some music to the background and possible narrate my voice in the end reading out "design your own shisha". Each frame is planned to go by fairly slow and the last two frames fading in and out of the screen. The music will fade out slowly as well.  My main focus through out the process of the commercial would be animating the shisha logo with the dot which i think will be the most complicated part.

5 Commercial Ideas

1st idea:

I thought about having a set of images from the different parts of the hookah move in slowly from the sides to come together and form a hookah. Then end the commercial with hands holding the hookah to show the idea of manufacture. Either that or have hands build a hookah on the screen. The tone would be serious and look proffessional. At the start of the commercial i would make the company name, "shisha.custom" appear and fade out and then follow through with the rest of the commercial. I thought about adding a costumer quote regarding the effectiveness of the company.

2nd idea:

The idea was to have a dessert scene with a camel moving by and have the animated hookah parts come in from different sides and form themselves into a hookah. The camel and dessert would show the traditional sense of where hookah derived from (the middle east). The tone would be humorous and the music style would be a traditional arabic song.

3rd idea:

I thought about having a serious of hookah parts quickly fill the screen until it is saturated with graphics and then animate some sort of explotion that would come into having a hookah show up solely in the screen. In the end i would have "shisha.custom" appear and then the slogan on the business card, "design your own shisha" appear and fade out. The tone would be serious and the commercial impacting. Maybe i would include a narration of a voice saying the slogan in the end.

4th idea:

I thought about making an animation of red dots (from move logo) move in and struggle to push the hookah parts together to form one. They could fight over the hookah parts as well. The look of the commercial would be playful and cartoonish and the tone would be humorous. In the end the dots would push into the screen "shisha.custom" and then have the slogan fade in and out of the screen. The music added would be playful and the dots could make sounds while playing the commercial.

5th idea:

The idea was to have popeye be the theme of the commercial. The stereotype of popeye is being stong by eating spinach yet he is also shown as a smoker since hes always smoking out of his pipe. I thought i would show a different side to him. The idea of the commercial would be to show him being bored of his pipe and having him find a screen of dofferent hookah parts. He would then choose every part he wanted to have customed. In the end he would appear happily smoking his hookah. I would then include at the end of the commercial a quote either saying "even popeye gets bored of his pipe" or something else. I would then have "shisha.custom" appear in and out of the screen. The tone would be humorous and music playful.

Commercial Reviews

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRbzJ0L1Zn8

This commercial was an Ad for the 911 Porsche. The visual style of the film was live action. The tone was serious and created an intense mood. It followed through slowly yet caught your attention from beginning to end. The quiet music added to the dramatic theme. Their target audience is for all ages of people as the main character is an elementary school boy who even though is young, he is already looking into the future to buying a porsche. The commercials aim is to advertise Porsche as a car that suits every personality and i designed for every ones comfort. There is a narrator whose voice is off screen. The commercial was successful even though it was quite long and played slowly, in the end it summed up the main point and was successful at selling what they wanted.

2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x9iYweART4

This was a Redbull commercial. The visual style was animated and the tone was very funny and humurous.
The product they are advertising is Rebull and how it "gives you wings" after you drink it. Their target audience seems like it is intended for everyone in the public. The product is trying to convince people that Redbull gives you energy and wings to let loose and express your inner self. This is shown when the frog asks the princess for an energy drink as he is feeling sluggish after the princess asks him to kiss her. The frog takes the redbull and the turns into a prince but instead of staying with the princess he grows wings and flys away as he tells her that shes not the one and wants to keep his options opened. The two characters narrate the story. The commercial was successful. It created humour and clearly portrayed the idea of the effects of Redbull.

3) http://www.youtube.com/user/clorox?v=LBRJLcFGDUU&feature=pyv&ad=%7Bcreative%7D&kw=%7Bkeyword%7D

This is an ad for Clorox. The visual style of the film is live action and the tone is funny.
They are advertising Clorox and its ability to remove the worst stains out of white clothes. Their target audience seems to be mostly for women who are mothers or house wives. The ad is showing that even in the worst situations when your clothes are stained it is possible to remove it. The lady abruptly spills the red wine on her white shirt without a worry after an awkward situation with her friends. The commercial was successful for the way that it showed that Clorox has the ability to remove the worst stains but i dont see how the scene with the women's friends was relevent. The advertisement for clorox could of been depicted better. You were only able to tell what the commercial was about in the last couple seconds.

4) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxbRdxbBROI

This was a commercial for Pampers. The visual style was live action and the tone was in between happy and sad to express emotion for the life style of each baby. The product is selling a brand of dipers called Pampers. The target audience is obviously mothers for the comfort of their baby. The commercials purpose was to show that no matter what the baby goes through since its born, Pampers is always there for them. Its talks about the problems by showing different scenes of babies in different situations. Some good and some bad. The narrator in this commercial is off screen. I think the commercial could of been more successful if done a different way. It was too long and couldnt see what it was about until the end when the brand of pampers came up. Also for people who dont know what Pampers is, it wasn't good at showing that they were dipers because it never explained it.

5) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnPvfiOFKKI

This was a commercial advertising the concept of the new Iphone 5. The visual style of the fiml is live action. The wasn't a specific tone for it. The commercial was serious and proffessional. They are selling the Iphone 5 and they're target audience im guessing is for all the public and whoever is interested in the newest technology. The problem they would be solving would be showing how the Iphone 5 is much different and better then the Iphone 4. The commercial shows these problems by slowly going through the features of the Iphone 5 and its applications. There is no narrator, it is only music playing. The commercial was successful in showing all the new Iphone 5 features.

Letter Head

For my letter head i added the same contact information included in the business card along with the logo. The logo is placed on the right of the paper since most information goes on the left side so i kept it empty. The company contact information is on the bottom left side to make it opposite from the logo. I made sure the logo and the contact information was was put as far out in the corner of the page to give enough space to write on.

Business card

While doing the business card I increased the font size for the information that was more important. I  made my name and rank in color to make it stand out. I made sure not to use too many variations of fonts so i kept it as Cochin for most of the card except for the name of the company which is the same font as on the logo to relate it. The idea of the dots and the line was to link the design of the card with the logo. The dots came from the arabic text in the logo. I added the slogan of "design your own shisha" to give a sense of personality to the card. While making the business card i made sure the text was aligned and the sizes worked well with the overall design to make it look proffessional. I decided to make it portrait instead of landscape to make it different then the usual business cards and because the logo suited more the portrait format.

Business card sketches!

The logo is in front of each business card for all 5 sketches. I decided to make it portrait because i thought it would stand out from the usual landscape business cards. In the back of each business card there are variations for the information and the actual design. For the design on the back of each card, i made sure it connected with the logo. On some i added straight lines as the border of the card which is how the logo is formed and in others i added the dots in the arabic text. On a different one i added the side of the hookah on each side of the card. The information varies in each depending on wether i want to make the card personal or specifically for the company. On the last two i decided to add a tag line to make it look as a website card and grab the costumer's attention. I added the phone number in each and URL of the company which is essential to show. I might add the maroon color of the logo as the background color on the final.

Questionnaire

1) What is your business?
We manufacture hookahs

2) Describe your business in one sentence
Supply material to costumize hookahs and produce them.

3) Who is your target audience?
Smokers. Hookah addicts. Men, women, teenagers. Arabic people.

4) Who are your competitors?
HookaH-HookaH. Hookah Company

5) What makes them better/worse than your product/service?
HookaH-HookaH not only has costumizing but sells tabacco and accessories. Its not dedicated to just customizing like my company. The company has a lot of things going on but looks unproffessional (their website looks messy). Hookah Company sells already manufactured hookahs, tabacco and accessories. It doesn't have customization.  I've never heard of any of these two companies to be known.

6)   Do you currently have an identity? yes.

7)  What do you like about it and what don’t you like about it?
I like that its a company specifically for the customization of hookah. The logo looks proffessional and modern and expresses quality from the way it is designed.

8) How do you want your image to be seen in two years?
We want this company to be succesfull and well seen by costumers. We want it to be promising and produce quality service and trust.

These following questions might seem silly, but their purpose is to help generate ideas.

9) If your company was an animal, what animal would it be and why?
A camel because it is seen as an arab stereotype and arabia is where the idea of hookahs derived from.

10) If your company/brand was a person, who would it be and why?
An arabic, modern dressed man. Hookah is widely smoked by arabic men which is commonly seen in arabic countries. Moderned dressed because its a sophisticated company yet derives from the tradition of men, arab smokers.

11) If your company/brand was an object, what would it be?
A modern looking hookah

12) If your customer was a cartoon character, who would it be?
Popeye. Hes always smoking a pipe and apart from eating spinach, is represented as a smoker in a cartoon form. This can add humor to the company and give it a sense of internationality instead of only arab culture.

Lyrical Collage- "I'm Coming Home..."

Through the process of making my Lyrical Collage i worked a lot with masks and the eraser tool to crop out the pictures. The edges of the image would sometimes be too precise so i would lower the hardness of the brush to smoothen the edges and to make the pictures mesh better with the background. I played with the layers to position each image towards the front or back and make some look closer then others. I also used the opacity tool to soften the brightness of the picture and make it mesh with the images in the back so everything would look more cohesive. I had a hard time adjusting the color of the images so they wouldn't contrast with each other so much but my tools were giving me a hard time and my image adjustments weren't working so well. Overall i think the outcome was good. I aimed at making it look aesthetically pleasing.

My Lyrical Collage is based off the song, Coming Home by Diddy. The images represent everything i have back home, family, friends, lifestyle. The pictures are set at the end of a straight road with a dark, cloudy sky and a women (me) walking towards the scene. It shows that after walking down a road of chaos, stress and sadness, i'm directing myself towards home and the place where i belong.

Vector Portrait

I chose to vector a baby picture of myself to represent Innocence. While creating the vector i made sure to add enough detail to make it look like the picture, yet at the same time i focused on making it look very animated by not adding the same colors as the original picture and not make the details so exact. For example, the flowers are made very bubbly and distorted to give the picture the animated look. The grass detail is very simple and only added to give it the slight impression of grass and still make it look cartoonish. Through out the process i played with the gradient mesh tool to give light in certain areas of the portrait and worked with the transparency tool to lighten certain objects where the colors were too bright. I worked a lot with the pencil tool, for example, i used it with the details in the hair, the flowers and the grass. In the end i blurred the background to make the baby stand out and give it some seperation from the background which was obviously further away.

Logo process!

The final logo done in Illustrator consisted of the same idea as my chosen sketch. Except, while producing it in Illustrator i made it more geometric and precise. The lines on top of the Arabic letters as shown in the drawing, i decided to change to dots, which is another way of showing the accents. I did this to make the logo look more aesthetically pleasing. To give the logo a more modern look, i added a thin outline to the form of the Hookah from one side. This made it look classier and give the impression of a shadow. I changed the stroke of the lines to give it more variety of design and seperate certain parts that i thought needed to pop out more then others. I added a neutral maroon color, which is a color commonly seen in the arabic culture. I also added color to make it look more aesthetically pleasing. My aim was to make the logo look clean and and modern giving it a simple look.

Sources: I went online to research the history of Hookah's to figure out how i was going to design it and the meaning i was going to give to the logo. From the research is where most of my sketched logos derived from. An example of how i incorporated the information into my designs was my first sketch where i used the name "Argileh" which was the ancient name what we now know as Hookah or Shisha.

Logo Critiques!

The Starbucks logo is universally known and the popularity of its coffee grew strong but when looking at the logo it is somewhat confusing as to why there is a lady in the middle. Maybe the meaning of Starbucks represents her or if the woman was incorporated in representation of the quality of the coffee as she is shown very clean and drawn with perfection. The logo is very interesting that way and it attracts people due more to its round shape and use of different, unique colors, which is how I recognize Starbucks Coffee. Over all I think the logo is very unique and recognized. The logo also seems very classy and serious.

The coca cola logo has been universally known and durable for the company since the late 18’s.  The design of the letters and the way they intersect with each other is very unique as not many logos these days are made in cursive. It also gives the coca cola logo a historic feeling because I feel like cursive was used more in the earlier ages. The letters in logos today tend to be more in print and heavier. The logo is also fun to look at due to the swirls of the letters and how they all intersect. The red color of the font grabs people’s attention and is very visible from far away.

The letters are thick and strong which makes the logo very visible and recognizable. I think the idea of the Fedex logo is very clever because the closeness of the letters were made intentionally to display a hidden arrow where the last E connects with the X. Its not noticeable which makes it very interesting as it has a hidden message in it. The arrow represents movement, which is what Fedex stands for; the transportation of items in a fast way. The logo seems very serious and professional. The way it is created with its font and color suits a mailing service.

The logo is unique and has a serious aspect to it due to its simplicity. I like how the C and the two N’s are connected as one. The logo is very universal. It’s visibility I don’t think is very good as sometimes when you’re watching the news on television it fades in with the rest of the information displayed on the screen. This I think is because of the red color, being very common on the screen, and how the white on the inside takes away the impact of the logo.

The representation of a shell has nothing to do with the meaning of gas but is uniquely recognized. A shell is not common object used for any other company and has always been memorable. It has been the face of Shell for many years and is considered universal. It is also very visible from the mix of the colors of yellow and red which makes it attractive to the public. It has a fun look to it from the color choice and the object of a shell, yet at the same time has a serious aspect coming from a gas company.
